My final classification for my bachelor arts degree in graphic design = 2:1 - Upper Second Class. (With honors)

THAT'LL DO PIG. THAT'LL DO.

Commission list is up as soon as I've moved. ;D
  • Mood: Tired
Degree complete.
Grade Pending.
But I am now a fully fledged graphic designer with a bachelor arts honors degree.
Feels pretty...weird.

Anyway, as soon as the end of year show is over I'll be opening commissions (along with sample pictures and all that jazz).
Not sure if anyone will take the bait but there's always a chance.

I'm also going to be in an exhibition with the great Artoyz : [link] over in France (and my contribution will be for sale in the shop for a limited time)

Feels good to be free~

(Side note, going to clean up my gallery soon. Mass deletion spree has been a long time coming.)

Edit 3: Pimping out more Lee art. I will get around to writing another chapter in the summer. (and tidying up the beginning because LOL that shit is terrible to read)

By ~infamousdee Go and check him out because his work is flawless.

and 3 weeks to go before I hand in my final major project and so far I have 2 job offers, not looking to shabby...so far.

---

Edit 2: I'm pimping out my tumblr. Just saying: [link]
Look at me. Being all down and hip and...eh.

--

Edit: Look at this! Look at these awesome pictures of Leeland and Victor (anole) by the super awesome *wanlingnic Ekk. ~ <3

---

I have 13 weeks to go before I graduate from my BA (hons) Graphic Design degree.

Lots to do in that time and so my involvement with DA may drop a little.
But in the meantime I wanted to say thanks for all the new watches, favs and comments you guys have given me. It's much appreciated.

And if you're dropping in from FF.net, Babel Fish is still going. I just need to concentrate on graduating. Leeland is like a petulant toddler who sometimes takes up more time than he should. Little brat. ~ <3

Just wanted to clear the last garble of a journal away and make way for something new.
Since last October-ish I've been working on a live brief to help design characters and put together the 1st issue of a new space themed graphic novel. (in collaboration with a few other illustrators and graphic designers)

I'm not legally allowed to post anything about it or any of the designs (Which is a bit of a ball ache when it seems to be all I'm doing.) It started off quite bumpy at first with one of my project managers dropping out and an art director having panic attacks but it seems to have sorted itself out.

This is why I never post anything. I don't like the idea of getting sued for posting my own artwork. However, as soon as the asset library and issue are complete then I'll post away to my little hearts content.

But if all goes well, I'll have made a freaking comic book.

The script writer originally wanted it for a big budget movie and his way to get into the industry (he thinks) is through making it a comic book. Personally I think this is a terrible idea and it spits on comics as a well rounded medium. But if I waste this opportunity then I'm an idiot, so personal feelings aside I'll get on with designing these characters...

And if he DOES ever move it along then I'll have made a prelude to a movie. Yay?

Hopefully he never finds out I have a DA. /Does this sound negative at all? ¬ ¬

Edit: Well that went better than expected. D:

In all seriousness, a sudden wave of nausea and terror hit me about half an hour before I went into see him. Calmed myself down, reminded myself that he's only human and the most he could do was be polite and sip coffee. (He's didn't, he was quite alright)

I wasn't quite prepared for him to like the Marvel Novelisation range as much as he did, or the little 'chibbi' characters I always put on characters t-shirts. He liked them more than my actual character illustrations and spoke about how that was much more "me" than the other stuff.

"It's obvious you can draw, but these here are great 'pointing at tiny Leeland on Lee's top' and stand out more than these 'pointing at poor Lee'..."

On one hand I was pleasantly surprised and was sort of at a loss for what to say. I was trying to wash the distaste out of my mouth of him pointing at a brief I did and saying "Now this reminds me of that Sin City guy."

"Miller?"

"Yeah!"

0.o Really? (They where high contrast black and white illustrations) >>

I do know where he's coming from though. That thousands of people want to illustrate/make comics and that it can be a hard market to get into. We spoke about what I could do when I graduate to potentially tie me over and I expressed my concern at being terrified of not getting a job/trying to figure out what agency's and studios I should send my portfolio too.

It's given me a great idea for what to do about a brief I'm working on, using those smaller characters but applying them to a darker theme. It should work, and if not *shrugs* I know of one person who may enjoy it.

(ha, this sounds really negative. It's not, I'm just exhausted from worrying myself too much)

On Friday I see Mark Howe: [link] and I think I won't be as nervous. Gonna be coooool~ 8) *shot*

---

On Monday my portfolio will be reviewed by Si Scott: [link]
Bricking myself? Just a little bit.

If you don't know who he is, shame on you. He's a graphic designer who works primarily with illustration and has created work for company's such as coca cola and penguin books.

I've almost done fiddling with the printed version of my very...very basic portfolio and tonight I'll adapt it for web and email, which I'll post a link for so you can all see the blinding horror I have to subject Sci Scott too.

On the plus side, I'm told he's quite pleasant to be around. I've just got to figure out what on earth I'm going to ask him.

Wish me luck?

On the 10th of January I start my final major project for my 3rd and final year at Leeds college of art. (10 major briefs in 5 months...yikes)

Until then all I have to contend with is my dissertation (coming along great) and writing Babel Fish (Meh...7K to go on this chapter)

I want to try and keep my self busy by illustrating and that's where you guys come in! I could spend the next 2 weeks drawing x-men characters and my own characters but I need to expand or I'm never going to break out of my...box?

So. I want to drawn 10 characters, full bodied and full coloured. The likely hood of anyone wanting this is slim so I'm not going to annoy myself by making a list that might not be filled.

Anyway, if you want free art, comment and link to a ref. I prefer drawing guys but girls are cool too. All ages but no anthro "fury" characters.

Blah blah blah. Happy holidays~

Pssst: Should point out that the styles may vary. Call it a lucky dip if yah will ;D

Hadn Drawn Awesome:

A few days ago I got an email through my website saying they 'had an offer for me.' I literally thought it was junk mail at first but the impulsive side of me clicked on it and I'm most certainly glad I did.

Hand Drawn Awesome is a relatively new website dedicated to delving into the world of indie, small press, web and creator-owned comics. They aim to expose the works of creators new and old to a wider audience and maybe, just maybe introduce people to some stuff they might never have considered or taken a chance on before.

And today Chris emailed me back saying I was the December feature: [link]

Thanks guys! And I hope more people see this website, it is awesome.

Geek-Art!:

You know how some people want to be on the Die Line or Lovely Package?
Well I wanted to be on Geek-Art! And a few days ago I checked my website email on a whim and got this: [link]

This is brilliant! Ok, so I'm refereed to as 'he' but, it's the internet. Whoever did the poster for BAGD movies (my course) were also on here a few months ago and when I saw that, I knew what site I wanted to be featured on.

So thank you Geek Art!

Yesterday was the Thought Bubble comic convention here in Leeds, Uk. It was amazing.

Pictures: [link]

I was on staff so I'd had less than 4 hours sleep thanks to Harry Potter 7.1 the night before and was at the Royal Armories for 7am. But I was not going to let that spoil my day.

Got to show Leigh Gallager (of Defoe 1666) to his table.
Him: Oh, hi I'm Leigh. *as I'm looking for his banner*
Me: Oh I know, me too!
Him: L-e-i-g-h?
Me: yes!
Him: =D

At the end of the day I got him to sign my staff top as well as Adi Granov (X-men, Extremist Iron Man.) Was a gopher for the panelists, offered John Romita Jr water and coffee (to the jealousy of a fan boy who was stood behind me) and the same with Brian Talbot. There were tonnes of other great artists there too but I didn't really get that much of a chance to stop and ponder about. It was a brilliant busy day and someone out there has a photograph of me reading volume 7 of the boy's as I was positioned out side the cloak room for an hour. I'm not sure who he is and I only looked up after he grinned and ran away. So Kudos to you, creepy photographer.

Jared, of OK comics, also snapped a picture of me looking quite annoyed that I had been left to watch the Self Made table while he went and moved the van.

I was hoping to go to the after party but when I went home to change and eat, closed my eyes for all of ten minutes and woke up at midnight. Ahh well, I still had a brilliant day, got tonnes of back issue comic books and shook some brilliant hands.

And the cosplay ... Guess who got to register the lovely darlings. ;D

I'm so looking forward to next year~

On Monday I enrolled into my 3rd and final year at Leeds college of Art. Today was my first day back after the long summer break. I've been talked at for five hours about module briefings/submissions/dissertations/placements and awesome designers coming in to visit us. So please excuse any spelling mistakes or general shittiness of this journal. (It's basically: HEY I'm here but...I'm busy)

My tutor, Fred, has informed us that there are now only 36 weeks left until we graduate. He also put that in terms of days, hours and minutes but I won't horrify you with that.

His basic summary of today's briefing was: "You are now all unemployed graphic designers. 3rd year is about you, what you want to do and how it's going to enable you to progress onto the next level i.e working in industry."

Well. I've just pissed my self metaphorically through fear.

I know 3rd year is going to be long, difficult and sometimes tedious in places. It's also going to be fun dammit! But I will be practically living in the studio until those 36 weeks are up so I'm here to say that there's probably not going to be a lot of action from me on here. Not that I'm noticed anyway but... I'm now going to be using my DA gallery to show case final solutions for briefs. My Benhance acount will be used for a more in depth look and my university blog is basically what my tutors are going to be assesing me on.

Ukkk. This also means Babel Fish get's put on hold. I'm going to try and work it around my dissertation (as Sundays are looking more likely to be writing days) but...work is more important and as much as I like writing about stupid tall blonde mutants and how poor green mutants have to deal with him, it's not a priorities. Boo.

Tonight I've got to finish writing up my proposed briefs for the year and come up with a rational an statement of intent.

I look knackered all ready. But hey! If I don't want to go the route of my parents and end up living on council estates with low paying jobs then I'll just have to look like I'm craving caffeine. all. of. the. time.

Sites:

Blog: [link]
Babel Fish: [link] (Not sure why I keep plugging this. I write it for my own assessment and just maybe it entertains someone else)

I've been with this DA account for 4 years now. (Despite it only reading as 3. It's 4 this October.) Anyway, other those years I've drawn terrible things and I've drawn thing's that I've looked at with great pride. Only to scowl and delete it a few weeks later. I've some what progressed over those years and I've come to terms with the terrible account name I chose for my self. ;D (which is still my email address. Ha)

Next year though I graduate from University. I'll be a fully-fledged member of society (Ekk) with a degree in Graphic Design and (as of yet) no job. This is the year for me to really start contacting people and getting myself out there. However, there is a problem with that.

None of my artwork in gallery reflects what I actually do. So far it's used for pointless doodles of my OC's and other terrible shenanigans that are not professional enough.

I have other accounts to display work of course. I have a Behance (which as of yet has one project on it…and I already dislike it) And a Carbon Made profile which is still under construction. Yet DA brings artists/illustrators and designers together. It's a great community that I don't want to leave because hey…where the hell would I get my exposure?

So here's the plan.

Either I simply leave this account as it is and toddle off and make a new one. Perhaps using this for Babel Fish doodles.

Or I delete everything I hate and keep this for the traffic it's already slightly making.

What do you guys think? (To tell you the truth, I now like the idea of the second option. Typical.)

They seem to be a very popular topic at the moment. (Twishite, True Blood, my house mate re watching all of the Angel series: Oh my sweet prince!) So I was not surprised to see them raising their ugly heads in the comic books I read. It's either very bad timing or Marvel know how to make their money. Sadly, I'm going with the later. (But hey, if it makes money then who am I to judge. I'm living of student loans~) ;D

X-men Second coming has almost finished. (The timing with the series has been a little weak. It's not yet finished and they've already rolled out X-men #1 which means I may as not well read Hellbound #3 or the ending or Second Coming...but we all know I will. *eyeroll*)

What makes me laugh is that I got 10 pages or so into 'The Death of Dracula' and I've not picked it back up. There really was no point picking it up as all of my questions where answered in X-men #1. It was actually written quite well (Victor Gischler) and I'm, actually looking forward to seeing how this plays out. I've read that the vampire story is only going to cover 6 issues and I think it's mostly to introduce Blade. They're addressing what it means to be a mutant (again). Do you need an X-gene to be considered a mutant blah blah blah. (Well lets looks at Warlock...hmm. No.)

Lastly on the X-men front, something else that made me chuckle: Welcome to the latest X-men event, courtesy of the house of Ideas. It's MUTANTS vs VAMPIRES and we're pulling out all the stops with this one.

Really. Really? We've had vampires before in Marvel. Hell, I got bored last year and wrote a whole terrible story line with them. They're popular at the moment. I just got done with "Let the right one in"(loved it) so I'm still reeling in alternate vampire stories that don't consist of sparkly testicles. Time will only tell on this one.

Now I just have to wait a week to finish Second Coming. -.- (Though Mike Choi's Hope and manly facial hair where slightly awe inspiring: !mikechoi One of the best artists Marvel have at the moment (and colourist in the case of Sonia Oback)

Also, slash. Nah. They're cannon. ;D. Just picked up Young Avengers: Children's Crusade and I've been looking forward to it for months. It's 9 part series which FINALLY deals with the idea of Billy (Wiccan) and Tommy (Speed) Being the twin sons of the Scarlet Witch. It's about time this team had a series again. They seemed to have been reserved for the limbo known as crossovers.

It makes me feel slightly pervy though watching two sixteen year old boy's almost make out and then shout at the page when it didn't happen. I was fifteen when they where introduced and they're still roughly the same age now that I'm almost 21. So that's a good five and a half years of cannon homosexual relationship with no on panel kiss. However, 9 issues. ;D I'm going to hell anyway, might as well make it an interesting ride.

Peace! X

The next 3 months for me are going to be a little...hectic? Despite it being the summer break for the art school I go to. Lot's of thing's to design and illustrate, websites to set up and meetings with other designers and agency's.

So...to get me into the swing of thing's I've set up a summer blog: [link] (I do have a normal blog which will resume when I head back for my 3rd and final year.)

I'll be posting  my doodles, bit and bobs that I find interesting and progress of how I work. (Anything I can think of really.)

Anyway, I hope that everyone else out there has a great summer. 1 week's time and I'll be sat at a pool side collecting freckles, ;D

XPeace!
  • Mood: Tired
Yup. 1 week left of my final major project and another left on my overall view of the year. Making a PDF to say; this is where I am in the 2nd year (stressed) , here is what I'll do over the summer (sleep allot) in realtion to graphic design and what I want to achieve in the 3rd year. (Hopefully, a career)

Then spend the remainder of the month helping the stressed 3rd years prep the studio for the final show. Hmmm painting a mass amount of space white in a short amount of time. I'm going to be dizzy.

But I have a week holiday with the boyfriend booked so I'm of to see if I can actaully tan. Not just gain a shit load of freckles.

So this summer will be allot of disertation research, portfolio building, visiting design studio's, Babel Fish, sleeping.

And then...3rd year. In which I'll turn into a even bigger hermit ;D.

Oh. Great Grandfather was cremated yesterday. It was a nice day all things considering - was on baby sister dutty menaing we didn't have to go into the crematorium with everyone else. I went and chased bumbleebee's with the 1 year old instead. Grandaddy would have laughed. =3

Peace! X

R.I.P Great Grandad Humphries. You where tall and awesome and had so many grandchildren, you didn't know what to do. So you gathered them all up, put them in a bus and had a pint or two.

Passed away thursday morning. <3

Not quite the same leauge as my great grandaddy dieing, but Nightcrawler also died. >> It was tear jerking and I felt a little bit sick. Which wasn't helped by the fact that I have been sick this week.

Shit week. Shit shit shit shit.

Big pile of shit.

So I just noticed that my last journal post was about a month ago. Whoops. Well, I've started my last project for the 2nd year. A self driven brief and so far it's not going to bad. I just need to start drawing/designing (Spent almost 2 weeks researching) ><. I'm personifying the regions of England, much like Hetalia. Only not Anime..or, you know, completely bat shit insane or making pretty boys out of a war. But I digress...

I've also picked up two album cover/booklet design for 2 musicians here in Leeds. They're going to be distributed around as well, so that's a little bit of exposure on the side. (Though one of the albums is really not my style-client driven to a T, but meh...work is work.)

Trying to sort out a placement at a design agency up in Newcastle, so I'm having a small heart attack at the moment. ;D Annnd to top it all off I've started my dissertation. DX

From good old wiki is you don't know what a disertation is:
"A dissertation or thesis is a document submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research  and findings. In some countries/universities, the word thesis or a cognate is used as part of a bachelor's or master's course, while dissertation  is normally applied to a doctorate."

8000 words not including quotes/interviews/bibliography...Gahhhh (at least it's shorter than what most degrees ask for.)

Oh what joy my summer is going to be. At least I have a holiday booked in less than a month. Hmmmmmm cancer rays, my sketch book and a boyfriend who doesn't function in warm weather. Normality it is then.

And Babel Fish....Ha, The spazz mutant has to be put aside for a few weeks, until my work load has finished drowning me. But new mac book in less than 3 weeks and I can finally start on a piece of art I've been planning for weeks-I just don't seemed to have started drawing it. Hmmm. Sounds about right for me.

Well this was longer than I expected and no one will read it. XD

Peace! X

My Graphic Design Tutor Fred: "Easter is 3 days, not 3 weeks. You don't need 3 weeks to celebrate a guy dying and coming back to life."

This is amusing everyone on the course is CofE or Catholic, Fred. -.-

So the next 3 weeks are going to be ever so busy and I need to make a to do list that I'll look at everyday. (and as DA is on as much as the computer-read; all day) This is a great place to put it. ;D

- 6 book cover re-designs for image class: Lost Souls?, Perfume, Hitch-hikers Guide, A Clock Work Orange, Dreamcatcher, Do Androids Dream?

- Rest of the image module; Guardian Illustrations, Type As Image (3 A1 Boards) Eye Chart, Sheep In NY (don't ask...bizarre teacher), BBC Storyboard animation, Book Brief; Blue Is.

- Enterprise and Innovation Presentation. (Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh)

- Contextual Studies Blog (which I should have done last week...whoops. Tomorrows Job 29/03/10)

- Last Brief finishing up the 2nd year. Need to decide what I want to do and make some notes.

(Non university related)

- T-shirt Design (need's to be ready for screen printing by next week!)

- Babel Fish Chapter 19 and 20 ... (when everything else is done and dusted, sorry D= )

Errr, I think that's it for now. Kick Ass and New Doctor Who next week...I'm ever such an excitable thing.
